Biography:
Eduardo Recife is an illustrator/designer/typographer from Brazil. His personal website "Misprinted Type" has been online since 1998, and won recognition in several books and magazines around the world. He has done work for clients such as The New York Times, HBO, Burton, Nike; and exhibited his artworks in the UK, US, Belgium, Brazil, Lithuania and Mexico.
Recife's work is full of dualities. Joyful vintage imagery is often put together in empty, sad compositions. Uncomfortable criticism of outrageous human conditions are made in a somehow peaceful, reflection inviting way. Antique symbols of art refinement are transformed to serve bold contemporary messages. Visual rejects of a sterile society, such as the texture of time taking over the material world are all combined in a harmonic and beautiful way. Computer technology, usually perceived as cold and virtual, comes in to perpetrate and homage some of the most tangible art forms.
The resulted tension of this endless parade of paradoxes speaks in ways that are much more like music being heard than imagery being decoded. Textures, patterns and overlaying objects create an overall effect you can almost listen to. The images are thus much more rich in feelings and subtleties than any text could ever describe.
But then, just when you think you got it all figured out, Recife evolves and develops a very personal style in his drawings, too. Another approach to the same themes are revealed. Technical tension is no longer there, since here the artist expresses himself exclusively through his own forms and shapes, unlike his illustrations, where, even though he gets to decide what to use and how, the imagery and objects at hand also influence the shaping of the final message. As such, his drawings reflect artistic maturity and a personal take in the most honest and pure way.
